The DisCO Manifesto also includes some background on topics like blockchain, AI, the commons, feminism, cooperatives, cyberpunk, and more.
Amid growing concerns over global warming, plastic in our oceans and the problems of electronic waste, there are some developing solutions. In Finland Kierrätyskeskus (re-use centres) have been going since the early 1990s. Owned by the city council, but run independently, there are now eight shops in and around Helsinki offering second-hand, repaired and upcycled items. Everything is donated by the public, via drop off centres, or at the shops or via home collection. All profit is used to improve local environmental and waste services.
This incredible cooperative is having an impact in reshaping the society by including most marginalized persons and by fostering economical and environmental sustainability. All these aspects are visible in the video where members explained us how they manage to "raise awareness" and how they are building a more sustainable economic model. But all this started in a very specific moment: the Argentinian 2001 crisis.
Like a regular commercial bank, you open up an account with your local waste bank. Periodically, you make deposits with your non-organic solid waste, which are weighed and given a monetary value, based on rates set by waste collectors. This value is saved in your account from which, like a regular bank, you can withdraw. The basic principles of waste banks remain the same across provinces: collect, save, earn, change behavior, and enjoy a clean neighborhood.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The Maker Mile (www.makermile.cc) was mapped by Machines Room a FabLab just down the canal on Vyner Street; a cobbled cul de sac filled with wharfs and warehouses home to taxi mechanics, sign printers, and London’s oldest umbrella maker. Instigated by Clear Village and with support from Human Cities, Maker Mile launched during London Design Festival 2015 with Open Mile. For one night 12 spaces opened their workshops and the public could get involved with hands on making and behind the scenes tours of workspaces. Over 600 people collected a map, made locally at East London Print Makers, followed the trail on a rainy Monday night and experienced the thriving community, that many, including those already working there, hadn’t realised was on their doorstep.
Fab City Prototype: TOMORROW
After giving the group a general perspective on the spaces and people that are currently shaping the prototype, participants were invited to work on three particular subjects that are key to designing a roadmap for the future of the neighbourhood:
Fabrication & materials: with complementary production ecosystems happening inside the local network of Fab Labs, citizens have the possibility to produce what they consume, recirculating materials inside the neighbourhood and the city to reduce waste and carbon emissions associated with long-distance mass production and distribution chains.
Food production: growing food on the rooftops of Barcelona. Through urban agriculture practices, citizens can grow part of what they eat turning production of local clean food in a regular pat of their lives.
Energy: Renewable energy production. With the arrival of domestic batteries and the cost drop of solar technologies, citizens have the tools to produce part of their domestic energy consumption.

A regra de três é a ferramenta, a técnica, o conteúdo: Se a/b = c/d então a.d = b.c.

We believe deeply that there are hundreds, even thousands, of businesses that could be thriving, at scale, if they focused on revenue growth over raising another round of funding. On average, the companies we've backed have increased revenues over 100% in the first 12 months of the program and around 300% after 24 months post-investment.

An experiment in free, co-operative higher educationThe Social Science Centre (SSC) organizes free higher education in Lincoln and is run by its members. The SSC is a co-operative and was formally constituted in May 2011 with help from the local Co-operative Development Agency. There is no fee for learning or teaching, but most members voluntarily contribute to the Centre either financially or with their time. No one at the Centre receives a salary and all contributions are used to run the SSC. When students leave the SSC they will receive an award at higher education level. This award will be recognized and validated by the scholars who make up the SSC, as well as by our associate external members – academics around the world who act as our expert reviewers The SSC has no formal connection with any higher education institution, but attempts to work closely with likeminded organizations in the city.
Critics of the ‘co-operative university’ have questioned our commitment to the idea of the ‘public university’. Indeed, co-operatives are anti-statist, but they also exceed the idea of ‘public ownership’ with that of ‘common ownership’, a social form of property that is the antithesis of the right of free alienability (which distinguishes capitalist private property). In short, co-operative higher education is entirely compatible with the idea of the ‘public’ if we reconceive it as an autonomous, open, democratically governed ‘commons’: An academic commons, democratically controlled by academic and support staff, students, cleaners and others.
Description: This course surveys recent developments in applied cryptography. Research in this field is motivated by privacy and security issues that arise in practice from areas like cloud computing, databases, surveillance and finance. Topics will vary each year.
In Fall 2019, the topic will be crypto for social good. We will learn how surveillance has been (and currently is) used to suppress dissent and how new surveillance technologies are deployed against social protest movements, intimate partners and immigrants. We will study how modern cryptography enables new privacy-enhancing technologies and investigate how cryptography can be used to protect dissent and enhance the safety and welfare of marginalized groups.

Our paradigm for value is production. But if you think about it, most work is not productive. Most work is actually about maintaining things, it’s about care. Whenever I talk to a Marxist theorist, and they try to explain value, which is…what they always like to do, they always take the example of a teacup. They’ll say like…usually they’re sitting there with a glass, a bottle, a cup. They say, “Well, look at this bottle. You know, it takes a certain amount of socially-necessary labor time to produce this. Say it takes you know, this much time, this much resources.” They’re always talking about production of stuff.
But a teacup or a bottle, well you know, you produce a cup once. You wash it like ten thousand times. Most work isn’t actually about producing new things, it’s about maintaining things.

The co-op proved a turning point in solving these problems, many of my interview subjects told me. In addition to the creation of a high value-added greenhouse industry, the co-op has helped villagers who’ve left the village in search of work in the city, as well as those too old to farm to contract out their land use rights to those willing and able to farm it.

Many of us are sheltering-in-place, practicing social solidarity by physically distancing, and shifting to majority online work and organizing in midst of the global coronavirus pandemic. For many folks that means adjusting to different work spaces and work-flows, ones where virtual meetings have become a regular and expected activity. On the one hand, being able to work from home or participate in virtual meetings represents a very clear form of privilege, in that you have work to do and don't have to do it in higher-risk settings like caregiving and essential retail. But within our online meeting spaces, other forms of privilege and associated power dynamics play out in ways that undermine our work and marginalize important voices and perspectives.
The COVID-19 crisis presents the greatest threat to community-based business in generations. The digital welfare state is commonly presented as an altruistic and noble enterprise designed to ensure that citizens benefit from new technologies, experience more efficient government, and enjoy higher levels of well-being. But, Alston said, the digitization of welfare systems has very often been used to promote deep reductions in the overall welfare budget, a narrowing of the beneficiary pool, the elimination of some services, the introduction of demanding and intrusive forms of conditionality, the pursuit of behavioural modification goals, the imposition of stronger sanctions regimes, and a complete reversal of the traditional notion that the state should be accountable to the individual.

As the socio-economic and political crisis subsided, some scholars assumed that worker-recuperated enterprises would disappear, but this did not happen. The figure below shows that although the number of new worker-recuperated factories peaked in 2002, takeovers continued even as the economy improved and unemployment rates declined. Workers had a new socially-recognized tool, which they continued to deploy in new contexts. The expansion was also favored by unemployment rates that, although declining, remained significant (around 7% over the past few years) and political conditions (at least at a federal level) that were not adverse to these processes.

Guerrilla Translation serves as the practical example to illustrate the model. The Guerrilla Media Collective is a pilot project for Distributed Cooperative Organizations or DisCOs.

It is a common name for federated social networks running on free open software on a myriad of servers across the world. Historically, this term has included only microblogging platforms supporting a set of protocols called OStatus. This didn't do justice to a large number of projects that federate, share same values and are reasonably popular. With the appearance and wide adoption of a new standard protocol called ActivityPub it makes no sense to further divide the federated world into “OStatus” and “non-OStatus” projects. This guide unites all interconnected federated networks under one term “Fediverse”.

The scope of this particular list is limited to things infrastructure developers (System Administrator, DevOps Practitioners, etc.) are likely to find useful. We love all the free services out there, but it would be good to keep it on topic. It's a bit of a grey line at times so this is a bit opinionated; do not be offended if I do not accept your contribution.
This list is the result of Pull Requests, reviews, ideas and work done by 500+ people, you too can help by sending Pull Requests to add more services or by removing ones whose offerings have changed or been retired.

In a worker-owned cooperative, employees govern their business as a democracy. Each worker-owner has an equal stake and equal vote in the co-op. From a brewery to a home care agency, any business can adopt a cooperative structure for the benefit of its employees.
Worker co-ops view employees not as a commodity, but as citizens with the same rights and responsibilities. Recently hired employees and veteran managers alike receive an equal share of the co-op’s profits and losses. Worker cooperatives create stable, empowering jobs that benefit the workers and surrounding communities.

Cooperatives around the world generally operate according to the same core principles and values, adopted by the International Co-operative Alliance in 1995. Cooperatives trace the roots of these principles to the first modern cooperative founded in Rochdale, England in 1844.
Not to be outdone by their federal counterparts, state and municipal policymakers are harnessing co-ops to solve the needs of their communities. One important example is the growing recognition by states that access to swift, reliable broadband is crucial for continued economic development and growth in the 21st century. According to the Federal Communications Commission, approximately 34 million Americans currently lack access to high-speed internet.15 Most of them live in rural areas and are usually served by rural electric co-ops.16

We are in a Cooperative Moment – one in which people find that they are excluded from their economy or society. In the past, people have looked to the cooperative business model to ensure workers, consumers, or producers have a greater say in the market – whether in commodity markets (agriculture co-ops with two million farmers), consumer finance (credit unions with over 100 million consumers), or basic utilities (rural electric cooperatives with nearly 50 million rural citizens). This talk will focus on how one in three people in the United States have used cooperatives to solve heretofore unsolvable problems and capture more economic opportunity: through greater public awareness, political organization, and advocating for a supportive public policy environment.

In the Spring 2020 semester the Institute for the Cooperative Digital Economy at The New School presented “Who Owns the World? Cooperative Alternatives to Surveillance Capitalism Now!” to introduce students at The New School, and members of the public, to the cooperative digital economy as a global movement that is building a concrete and near-term alternative to crony capitalism and the burning problem of economic inequality.
Students engaged with a range of guest speakers working on varying aspects of an alternative digital economy, from resistance against data colonialism, to cooperative ownership, democratic governance of digital platforms, to cryptocurrencies, distributed ledgers like Blockchain, and a slew of other topics. These guest lectures were livestreamed via a partnership with the Internet Society New York Chapter. The series was cut short after 8 sessions, due to COVID-19.

We need to approach the problem of widening income inequality from 6 different directions. The trick is to understand how they all fit together while choosing manageable actions that make sense to who you are. We may not be able to do everything at once but think of each action you take as an incremental step towards the structural change our economy needs. To get started, tell us who you are or select an issue that matters to you below.

What is this? A hardware metadata standard for discoverability of open hardware. How does this work? Via a human and machine-readable “manifest” file you can put next to your read-me and license files (see an example here). This simple text file formatted in YAML will flag web crawlers that there is something interesting out there and pass them on the information you want to share about your project!
You can create a manifest file for your hardware project in our web interface and add a reference to it in our reference implementation database. This will automatically index it in our automated search page along more than 400 other pieces of hardware. We also currently work on the integration of this standard in the Observatory of Open Hardware, our search engine for sustainable open hardware, open design and maker projects as well as in the upcoming DIN SPEC 3105 standard for open source hardware documentation.

The Cleveland Model brings community economic development and the purchasing power of anchor institutions like hospitals and universities together into a single coordinated strategy to build democratized wealth and cooperative business ownership in low-income neighborhoods. Find out more about the model here.
Something important is happening in Cleveland. The Democracy Collaborative, in partnership with the Cleveland Foundation, the Ohio Employee Ownership Center, the City of Cleveland , and the city's major hospitals and universities—is helping to implement a new model of large-scale worker-owned and community-benefiting businesses. The Evergreen Cooperative Initiative is beginning to build serious momentum in one of the cities most dramatically impacted by the nation's decaying economy.
Inheriting a legacy of deindustrialization and faced with mounting socio-economic challenges, municipal officials in Preston in the UK – one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution – have been exploring new ways to create a more inclusive and democratic local economy as the foundation for systemic transformation. They have been able to draw upon long-standing regional traditions dating back to the founding of the modern cooperative movement in nearby Rochdale in 1844, but have also looked to promising examples overseas – including the ‘Cleveland Model’ in Ohio – for inspiration. We are pleased to publish this article on their progress and ambitions.

Silicon Valley technology is transforming the way we work, and Uber is leading the charge. Drawing on her new book 'Uberland: How Algorithms Are Rewriting the Rules of Work', Technology Ethnographer Alex Rosenblat explores how American technology ideology underwrites a future where any of us might be managed by a faceless boss.
Cooperative development in specific economic sectors sometimes followed divergent paths, influenced by the social and market conditions of a given time and place. Periods of significant cross-pollination between sectors also occurred, especially when broader socio-economic forces were at work. It is in the agricultural sector, however, that cooperatives have had the most significant economic impact in the U.S.

A Gente Rio / We River considers the connections between sites of extractive and industrial infrastructure and environmental disasters in Brazil. The film focuses on four sites: the Itaipu Dam, the second-largest hydroelectric plant in the world, where the process of land expropriation became the catalyst for the emergence of the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST); the Belo Monte Dam on the Xingu River, where environmental licensing has been marked by a series of irregularities and profound indigenous resistance; the Bento Rodrigues Dam, which collapsed, releasing hazardous waste from the mining company Samarco and caused an unprecedented environmental disaster in Brazil; and, lastly, the Vale do Ribeira, where indigenous, caiçara and quilombola communities have been resisting against the construction of a dam.
